Volunteer!

One of the most frequent questions COC receives from family and friends of people with developmental disabilities, community residents, civic organizations and business leaders is:"How Can We Help?"

There are many ways individuals and businesses can help COC in helping people with developmental disabilities lead purposeful and fulfilled lives. One is to volunteer your time to lend a hand at COC homes to paint, perform household maintenance and repairs, chaperone activities, or provide transportation.

Another way to help is to befriend a person living in a COC home who has limited family involvement and is in need of a friend. Only one or two hours a month (more preferred when possible) is needed to spend time with someone – visiting, playing a game, going out to eat or to a movie, bowling, going to a ballgame are just a few meaningful experiences the donor and resident can enjoy.

Many people find it meaningful to help out by agreeing to serve on a committee. The opportunity to share your skills, knowledge and experiences by joining a team of other volunteers in a task is an important way to help by attending committee meetings, usually monthly.

And one way that everyone can help is by becoming a member of COC. Community Opportunity members will receive newsletters, legislative updates, information pertaining to people with developmental disabilities, and the opportunity to participate in our annual business meeting. Annual membership dues are $25.
