Community Opportunity Center was founded in 1965 and began with one home, the Plymouth Opportunity House. Today, COC comprises almost two dozen homes in northwestern Wayne County, Michigan, including houses and apartments owned by COC, rented or leased homes, and a condominium owned by a family member for the benefit of a loved one. The number of residents sharing a home varies; however, most homes consist of four or fewer sharing a small house, apartment or condominium. COC also serves as a provider or as a staffing agent.
As a provider, COC takes direct responsibility for managing an individual’s finances and personal needs as identified by the individual and his or her support team. As a staffing agent, COC manages an individual’s finances with a fiscal intermediary such as an ARC chapter. In both instances, a person’s support team is comprised of professionals, family and friends.
Whether a provider or staffing agent, COC’s primary aim is to encourage greater independence for each individual.
