About Us
|
Community Opportunity Center was founded in 1965 and began with one home, the Plymouth Opportunity House. Today, COC is made up of almost two dozen homes in northwestern Wayne County, including homes and apartments owned by COC, rented or leased homes, and a condominium owned by a family member for the benefit of a loved one. The number of people who share a home varies; however, the majority consists of four or fewer sharing a small home, apartment or condominium. COC also serves as a provider or as a staffing agent. As a provider, COC takes direct responsibility for handling an individual’s finances and personal needs as identified by the individual and his or her support team. As a staffing agent, COC manages an individual’s finances with a fiscal intermediary such as an ARC chapter. In both instances, a person’s support team is comprised of professionals, family and friends. Whether a provider or staffing agent, COC’s primary aim is to encourage greater independence for each individual.

Provide quality housing and comprehensive support for persons with developmental disabilities as well as assistance and advocacy to help them become independent citizens involved in their community.
There are many ways you or your group can help COC and people with developmental disabilities lead purposeful and fulfilled lives. One is to volunteer at COC homes to paint, perform household maintenance and repairs, chaperone activities, or provide transportation. Another way to help is to befriend a person living in a COC home who has limited family involvement and is in need of a friend. Only one or two hours a month (more preferred when possible) is needed to spend time with someone – visiting, playing a game, going out to eat or to a movie, bowling, going to a ballgame are just a few meaningful experiences the donor and resident can enjoy.
