Individuals We Support

Because COC is dedicated to guiding and assisting persons with developmental disabilities, we focus on providing the individuals we support with the tools and support they need to maintain equality, integrity, and respect in every aspect of their lives.

A large portion of our efforts goes toward helping the persons we support find and secure fulfilling employment and maintain an active social life, both at home and in the community. We also understand that giving back is a vital responsibility of any respected community member, so we also help the persons we support find and participate in volunteer activities that not only benefit their communities, but also allow them the opportunity to enjoy helping others in need.

Jobs

Securing gainful employment is one of the most important aspects of living a fulfilled adult life. As such, COC partners with a number of local businesses and organizations who value all that persons with developmental disabilities can contribute to their operation. Whether a person we support finds a job on his or her own, or chooses to work for an entity that partners with COC, we ensure that they have the tools they need to succeed in their job, as well as the transportation to get to and from work each day.Developmental Disabilities Service - Community Opportunity Center - help_(2)

Activities

Each year, we organize a number of activities that help the COC community form a closer bond and enjoy a break from the daily routines. COC employees and volunteers, as well as the persons we support and their families are encouraged to take part in a number of activities throughout the year, such as picnics, dances, trips, Special Olympics, and more. In 2004, Lisa Lindner and Geraldine Borio coordinated the first 4-day COC supported camping experience, which continues to be a favorite annual activity enjoyed by all.

Community Life

Helping the persons we support maintain an active presence in their communities is one of the most important aspects of our organization. Whether a person lives in a COC owned property or a house, condominium, or apartment that we support, our employees and volunteers are dedicated to helping them enjoy all that their community has to offer. From shopping at the mall to exercising at a local recreational center, we help the persons we support enjoy access to every available opportunity for community involvement.

Volunteering

Every person, regardless of his or her developmental disabilities, has something to offer to others in need. This is why we are committed to informing the persons we support about opportunities to volunteer and give back to their communities. We help them find volunteer opportunities that suit their interests and talents and give them the resources they need to be an effective and helpful volunteer.
